David Murray was slow off the line but the resulting traffic jam sorted itself out and Poore was out ahead. Nixon, Walker and Bolster followed at the end of the first lap. On lap two, Walker and Bolster passed Nixon and crept up on Poore. Poore pedalled harder as did Walker who used a great deal of road which thwarted Bolster's efforts to pass. They finished in that order, Bolster's stirring drive being rewarded with fastest lap.

Fastest Lap : Gerard 83.39 mph 1'43.6" (Record) Winning Speed : 80.56 mph
Goodwood's first meeting ended with the Formula One race. The crowd was rewarded with a fine struggle as the climax to the day's events. Reg Parnell's Maserati on its first appearance in England, was attended on the grid by Wilkie Wilkinson (air-pump). Reg was favourite to win but Bob Gerard had proved faster in practice. Duncan Hamilton's rear brakes needed attention following a practice spin. From the start Hamilton led but Parnell surged through the field together with Geoffrey Ansell. Soon Parnell moved ahead with Hamilton on his heels, followed by Hampshire, Gerard, Salvadori, and Harrison. After two laps Hampshire was second and Gerard third. By lap three Gerard was close behind Parnell and gaining. The Maserati had superior acceleration but Gerard closed on the corners. The final two laps saw a determined Gerard doing all that he could to pass Parnell to the great excitement of the crowd. However, Parnell crossed the line just 0.4 seconds ahead to win the circuit's first Formula One race. Gerard had the satisfaction of setting the fastest lap and so a new record.

Fastest Lap RECORD : Stewart/Clark 107.46 mph 1'20.4" Winning Speed : 105.07 mph
The rain stopped in time for the main race - small comfort for Spence as the fuel injection on his Lotus packed up on the warm up lap. It was Graham Hill who led away under clearing skies from Jim Clark whose Lotus was powered by the new 4 valve Climax engine. Gurney was next followed by Jackie Stewart, Brabham, McLaren, Bonnier, Anderson, Rindt, Attwood, Taylor and Siffert. Hill stayed ahead until Clark got past at Woodcote on lap 6 and started to draw out a lead. Hill was now being caught by Gurney who in turn had Stewart close behind.
The rest, led by Brabham, were some way back. It seems unfair that Anderson should have been disqualified for missing the chicane when, in fact, he did quite the opposite, bursting through the wooden section when his brakes all but disappeared. Clark was all the time moving away from Hill who had Gurney now breathing down his neck. A second incident at the same spot a few laps later could have been far more serious. Siffert got out of shape on entering the chicane and charged the brick wall head-on. The car was wrecked and the Swiss was rushed to hospital where he was found to have no more than severe cuts and bruises.
Gurney finally passed Hill on lap 26. Stewart decided that he should also pass his team leader and did soon lap 32. Hill's BRM was now sounding unwell and he looked set to drop further down the order till he appeared in second place again. Gurney and Stewart were missing. Eventually the Brabham came slowly round to retire with no oil pressure. The BRM was stuck out on the course with a broken camshaft. Clark had a comfortable win from a fortunate Hill.
This was the last Formula 1 race held at Goodwood. 1966 would see the introduction of the 3-litre formula. Concern was already being expressed at the speed of the larger engined sports cars. Clark and Stewart had created a new joint circuit record of 107.46 mph. It was the lack of run-off areas which was worrying. The circuit was surrounded on three sides by public roads so that there was no room to move the spectators further away from the action. The public had been kept safe since 1948 but the development of the racing car was about to cause the demise of Glorious Goodwood.
